What guidance will I receive on driving the boat?

You don't need a licence or any previous experience to drive the boat, we'll give you as much instruction as you need until you feel comfortable to operate the vessel yourself.

How will I know where to go on my trip?

Depending on your length of stay, we can provide you with suggestions.  There is a chart on each boat to help you with your navigation and if you’d prefer to avoid using the lock system, there is an option for this too.

Are there any additional costs?

You will be charged for the fuel that you have used at the end of your trip. SMART cards are needed to operate the locks on the Shannon-Erne. They cost €6.35 for 10 units and €12.70 for 20 units. Units on the SMART card can also be used for shower (2) washing machine (5) tumble dryer (5). Locks and bridges on the River Shannon are also charged at approximately 1.50 euros each.

We will provide you with some logs and firelighters for our wood burners to get you started and tell you where you can purchase more during your cruise.

What power and heating is on board?

The barges are fully equipped with central heating, 240v electrics suitable for phone charging, lap tops at all times and hairdryers when the engine is running. Each boat has a log burner too.

How do I operate the lock system?

The locks are operated using a SMART card. If you would prefer not to go through the locks, routes are available which will take you into the open lakes.

How much deposit am I required to pay to secure my booking?

A deposit of approximately 25% of the total hiring fee is required at the time of booking. A barge is booked only when the signed completed booking form together with the deposit has reached the owner. For short hires less than a week, full payment is required to secure the booking. The hirer is responsible for the whole of the hire fee and the balance must be paid One Calendar Month before the day of embarkation.
